If you were shown a random image from google street view, would you be able to find the location of the photo? There’s no longer any need to introduce google maps, the tool you certainly don’t know how to live without these days. While it’s mainly used to find your way around and plan routes, it can also take you to the four corners of the globe, using street view technology to travel from home. Created some ten years ago, the online game geoguessr has become increasingly popular over the last few months, during this time of year when travel is so rare. In this game, players have to wander around in street view and observe the various elements around them to determine where they are. An original way to get away from it all and discover new horizons.

Not as easy as it looks

At the start of a game, the player is randomly sent to Street View. The goal?
Find out exactly where he is on the map. To do this, he can use all the options offered by the platform. You can move around, look around and even zoom in. Vegetation, building materials, road markings, road signs, license plates and much more can all be used to pinpoint your location. The task may seem simple, but it’s not, especially when you’re lost on a country road miles from civilization.

When the player has gathered enough information and thinks he knows where he started his game, he can open the map, point to the location he thinks is correct and validate. He then discovers the distance, as the crow flies, between the point he has selected and where he actually was. A certain number of points are awarded according to the result. The closer he is, the higher his score. A game consists of 5 slots. At the end of the five, the player obtains his final score and enters the ranking.

Variants to spice up the game

The most famous mode is the world version, a real challenge for beginners. The game also offers a range of maps with specific geographical areas or themes. If you wish, you can limit yourself to Belgium or Brussels, or choose only famous places in the world, for example. For a change of scenery, you could even select exotic destinations only.

In addition to the official maps created by the game’s creators, there are also a substantial number of maps designed by the players themselves. Several options are available at the start of a game. The game can be played in explorer mode, i.e. with no time limit, ideal for enjoying the scenery. Games can then last for hours. A time limit can also be set.

This means you can play the same card over and over again to try and beat your score. There’s also a multiplayer option. You can challenge your friends or colleagues on the same map. The aim is to get as close as possible to score more points than your opponents. Finally, for the more seasoned players, you can also select to disable movement and/or zoom.

As for the future, it’s not a question of predicting it,
but of making it possible.

Perfect for a team-building trip from the comfort of home

Would you like your employees to travel from home?

Offer them a game of Géoguessr.

The game lends itself perfectly to the current situation. Get them to play against each other to boost motivation, or bring them together in a single game with screen sharing to strengthen group cohesion.

You can also combine the two by creating several teams.

To further personalize the activity, create your own map by selecting locations of importance to your company. A real entertainment tool, this game can also be used for all kinds of other purposes. You could simply allow your staff to rediscover your premises, or use it to reveal to your teams, in the most unusual way, the location of your future offices or a new point of sale, or even, when possible again, the next venue for your incentive trips.

And for even more immersion, it’s entirely possible to carry out the activity in augmented reality, using a VR headset to travel from home.

Does it seem too complicated or time-consuming?
